Both less and more complex industrial automation systems are based on signals and measurements sent from sensors and measuring transducers. However, the measuring unit can often be so complex that it is possible to describe it as a system. The more complex and expanded the measuring network is, the more visible it is. An example of such a system is a data acquisition system based on the ModBus protocol. The use of specialised, multi-channel inputs and output modules enables the building of a distributed, multi-point acquisition or even control network. It is also possible to isolate specialised systems, highly advanced technologically, which require the use of precise sensors.
